Scam alert: Emails from the IRS

WASHINGTON – May 2, 2012 – The IRS is warning taxpayers to beware of tax-related phishing schemes that try to get you to visit fraudulent web sites and input your sensitive financial information.

In one scheme earlier this year, many people received an e-mail that appeared to be from the IRS, notifying the public about an early filing deadline and a penalty for missing it. The e-mail urged users to click on a link that led to a website almost identical to the IRS website. The site requested users to input personal information, such as their bank account information and birth dates.

The IRS “does not initiate contact with taxpayers by e-mail or any social media tools to request personal or financial information,” the IRS said in a statement. The agency also doesn’t “send e-mails stating you are being electronically audited or that you are getting a refund. This includes any type of electronic communication, such as text messages and social media channels.”
